Windows Vista - 32 Bit Console - Agent Discovery Cannot Run When User Account Control (UAC) Is Enabled - Remote Control is "Grayed Out" - A Red Circle with a Slash

Version 2

    Description

Windows Vista - 32 Bit Console - Agent Discovery Cannot Run When User Account Control (UAC) Is Enabled - Remote Control is "Grayed Out" - A Red Circle with a Slash

Vista Service Pack 1 Increases the likelyhood of this issue because of some enhanced security included in that service pack.

When User Account Control is enabled the remote control options are grayed out in the 32bit console.  Running the 32bit console on Vista there are problems when UAC is enabled.

If the refresh button is clicked the computers stay active for a couple of seconds.  If you right click on a computer during that time the remote control option is available and works.

    Cause

By default in Windows Vista User Account Control prevents the console from running as an adminitrator even if the user is an administrator.  The console needs to run some of it's internal tasks as an administrator.  UAC is preventing Agent Discovery from detecting the state of the agent on the client computer.

    Resolution

Option 1 - Turn off UAC for any computer with the LANDesk Console installed

Option 2 - Right click on the Management Suite console icon and click "Run as Administrator"

Option 3 - Set the executable to always run as administrator

    1. Go to c:\program files\landesk\managementsute\

    2. Right click on Console.exe and click properties

    3. Click on the Compatibility tab

    4. Under Privilege Level put a check in the box labeled "Run this program as an administrator"
