Outbound Mail Error: Unable to connect to the remote server

    Problem:

    Outbound Mail Event log error -  Failure sending mail. Unable to connect to the remote server; An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.

     

    Solution:

    Open Console, Administration, Mail, Outbound Mail settings. Make sure that the Mail server Name, User name and password to login to the mail server are correct. Save the settings and click on the Test button above the window. The test should be successful.  If not, Port 25 may be blocked on the server.

     

    Check that antivirus software or firewall is not blocking port 25. MacAfee antivirus by default blocks port 25 to prevent the mass mailing worm.

     

    To check whether port 25 is blocked, open a command prompt window and type 'telnet mailservername 25' replacing mailservername with the actual name of the mail server.  This should connect and prompt for a command, at which point you can enter 'quit' and return. If the connection fails then the mail engine will also fail to connect.
