Basic IIS Setup for Avalanche Payloads

    This guide will explain a simple IIS setup that can be utilized for hosting Avalanche Payloads via Manifest URL.



         Install IIS on Windows 7/8/10

    1.      Click Start and then click Control Panel.

    2.      In Control Panel, click Programs and Features:

    3.      Click Turn Windows features on or off:

    4.      In the Windows Features dialog box, click Internet Information Services and then click OK:

         Install IIS 8 on Windows Server 2012

    1.      Open Server Manager.

    2.      Under Manage menu, select Add Roles and Features:

    3.      Select Role-based or Feature-based Installation:

    4.      Select the appropriate server (local is selected by default), as shown below:

    5.      Select Web Server (IIS):

    6.      No additional features are needed for IIS, so click Next:

    7.      Click Next, Next, Install:

    8.      When the IIS installation completes, the wizard reflects the installation status:

    9.      Click Close to exit the wizard.


         Install IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008 R2

    1.      Open Server Manager.

    2.      In Roles Summary, click Add Roles:

    3.      Use the Add Roles Wizard to add the Web Server (IIS) role:

    4.      Next, Next, Next, Install.



    1.      Run the IIS console (Internet Information Services Manager):

    2.      Create a Virtual Directory under the Default Website.

    a.       Expand the left pane until you see Default Web Site:

    b.       Right-click on Default Web Site and select Add Virtual Directory.

    c.       Enter the Alias and Physical path and select OK. The Physical path will be an actual directory on your PC/Server:

    d.       If the Physical path doesn’t already exist, create it as a folder on your PC/Server:


    1.      Right-click on your Virtual Directory folder and select properties.

    2.      Click on the Security tab and Edit and Add.

    3.      Make sure the location is your hostname:

    4.      Type IUSR into the object names and click Check Names:

    5.      Click on IUSR in the usernames and make sure Read and Write are both checked:

    6.      Click OK and OK.


    Add MIME types

    1.       Open the IIS console, expand the left panes, and click on your Virtual Directory folder.

    2.       Double-click on MIME Types in the IIS settings in the middle pane:

    3.       Click Add in the right pane and enter .* in the extension and application/octet-stream for the MIME type. This will allow you to host any file type in the Virtual Directory:



    1.       IIS needs to not conflict with any of the Avalanche Ports:


    2.       By default, your Virtual Directory will run on Port 80.

    3.       Best practice is to install IIS on a PC/Server separate from your Avalanche Enterprise Server. This is required if you want to utilize https (port 443).
