Environment Manager configurations fail to apply for users without Local Administrator permissions

    Introduction

    When a user logs on to an endpoint without administrative permissions, the Environmnet Manager configuration fails to apply.

    Detail

    This issue may occur when the .DEFAULT hive in HKEY_USERS is incomplete and/or corrupt.

    When the EmUser process attempts to create configuration.aemp file in the users profile, EmUser retrieves the value from the following location in the registry:

     

    KEY PATH:   HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

     

    VALUE NAME: Local AppData

    If this key does not exist then a default location is presented back instead in the form of:

    • C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local

    When a standard user logs on they do not have access to the folder path above whereas a user with administrative permissions does, consequently only users with local administrative rights are able to load the configuration correctly.

    In order to resolve this issue, please export the Registry Key above from a known working endpoint and import the registry entries into the registry on the affected endpoints.

    NOTE: As data is missing from this registry location, it is not possible to analyse if any other data is also missing from the machine for proper functionality. In this instance it is we recommend that you consider rebuilding the affected machine and/or build.
