Performance Manager Local Statistics Service (LSS) crashes immediately after service start

    Introduction

    When the Performance Manager Local Statistics Service (LSS) is installed on a fresh machine (with no Performance Manager configuration and agent) it may crash.

    Detail

    On service start, the LSS checks for the existence of the Performance Manager Agent (PmAgent.exe)

    If the PmAgent does not exist, the LSS service will stop.

     

    Intermittently on a Windows 2008 x64 machine, the service stops too quickly whilst the msxml.dll is still being initialized. This causes the crash dialog to appear.

    This Issue occurs due to Windows 2008 x64 interpreting the behaviour as a Process Crash when the service stops within a very shortly after it starts.

     

    The dialog box can safely be closed and this behaviour causes no adverse effects.
