    Introduction

Before these items were added to Desktop Settings in Environment Manager 8.3, pinned items within the Taskbar and/or Start Menu are not retained.

    Detail

To retain these items prior to Environment Manager 8.3, a number of folder locations and registry keys need to be retained in order to preserve pinned items correctly.

In order to retain pinned items to the Taskbar and Start Menu, data within the following two folder locations will need to be retained:

    • %AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu
    • %AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\Taskbar

The following registry keys will also need to be retained. Either via Environment Manager Policy using Registry hiving, or via Personalization using Session Data.

    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage2
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Programs
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist

The above are covered natively within Desktop Settings from Environment Manager 8.3 onwards, and within the "Taskbar and Start Menu" windows settings groups in later releases.

Additionally, if you wish to retain the 'recent' list (Jump List) items when you 'right click' on a Taskbar icon or expand the Start Menu icon, you will also need to capture the following folders and registry keys:

    • %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
    • %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations

    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RecentDocs
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

NOTE: Depending how these are captured, you may wish to use the Known Folder names (CSIDLs) instead of variables, ie:

    • {CSIDL_APPDATA}\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
    • {CSIDL_APPDATA}\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations
