    How to add further user defined entries to the GoldMine menu?

    I am using regularly certain Excel sheets or other applications and I wondered if I can include them into the GoldMine menu?

    Resolution

    A. Taskbar customizations:

    - many times document links, external applications and web sites are added to the GoldMine Taskbars which can be added on to the Toolbars and executed by single clicks as other Toolbar icons e.g. Documents, Appointments, Options etc. As this feature provides even further possibilities like using other user's macros this possibility should be considered and reviewed. Further information can be found in the GoldMine help via Help >> GoldMine Help >> Welcome to GoldMine Premium Edition > Getting Started > Customizing the Taskbar

    B. Toolbar customizations:

    - there is also the possibility to add further user defined items to the GoldMine menu. This provides possibility to insert document links, external applications, web sites etc. as GoldMine menu entries

    - in previous GoldMine Corporate Editions the menus were not so flexible as in GoldMine Premium Edition which means the format of the FileMenu instructions needed to be very strict, while in GoldMine Premium Edition menu entries can be added/changed via the Customize Toolbar feature (see also Online help via Help >> GoldMine Help >> Welcome to GoldMine Premium Edition > Getting Started > Customizing Toolbars).

    - As the FileMenu feature/instructions are not officially maintained anymore by Product Management / Development it is strongly recommend to keep the strict format although certain options or instructions may not be necessary anymore.

    - FileMenu instructions and format:

    [FileMenu]
    Opt#=MText,CmdLine,DDECmd,Mnum

    [FileMenu] = section header for defining the commands/menus
    # = number (order on menu)
    MText = desired menu entry, place an & (ampersand) in front of the desired hot key, avoid duplicate hot keys
    CmdLine = link or application target
    DDECmd = if applicable DDE command
    MNum = location within the menu (not applicable anymore)

    Example
    Opt1=&Quote,C:\Quote.exe,,8
    Opt2=&Letter,,Letter.doc,6

    [STEPS]
    1. Log out of GoldMine as the testing user e.g. JOHN (in the following example)
    2. Browse to the GoldMine shared folder
    3. Make a copy of JOHN.INI and rename it to JOHN.INI.BAK (so that you still have the backup file for the original USER.INI)
    4. Open the JOHN.INI with Notepad
    5. Add / adjust the prepared section [FileMenu]

    [FileMenu]
    opt1=S&QL Management Studio, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\ManagementStudio\Ssms.exe",,8
    opt2=&SLA Contract,,\\w12r2\GoldMine\Docs\SLAcontract.rtf,5

    >> this add the entries into the available commands within the File category for customizing toolbars within GoldMine and will not actually add the menu entries

    7. Save the JOHN.INI
    8. Start GoldMine as JOHN again
    9. Right Click into the menu or toolbar of GoldMine >> Customize
    10. Tab Commands
    11. In the Category File >> Scroll down until you will see your new defined items (as above example SQL Management Studio and SLA Contract)
    12. Drag and drop them into the main menu or into any sub menu
    >> this changes the [Toolbar] section and inserts the items into the menu
    13. Close (Customization Mode)
    14. verify functionality of your desired menus

    Additional Information:

    - The way to remove the items should be done in the reverse order, means first to remove from the menu through the customization mode and if desired then to delete the section/lines from the specific USER.INI

    - this is a user specific customization, means it is only available for the adjusted user. A GoldMine Administrator can force the Toolbars and menus to be globally the same by a user-override setting for the sections sucessfully applied and adjusted [FileMenu] and [Toolbar] sections in the GM.INI. This needs to be documented and communicated with the users as it will override their personal preferences

    - This setting will override any setting within the USER.INI
    0. The testing User should log out of GoldMine
    1. Browse to the GM.INI (GoldMine folder on application server or if undocked user you’ll find that locally)
    2. Make sure to create a backup of the file
    3. Open the GM.INI via Notepad
    4. Locate / Add the section [USER-OVERRIDE:FileMenu]
    5. Add / Adjust /Verify the setting
    opt1=S&QL Management Studio, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\ManagementStudio\Ssms.exe",,8
    opt2=&SLA Contract,,\\w12r2\GoldMine\Docs\SLAcontract.rtf,5
    6. Locate / Add the section [USER-OVERRIDE:Toolbar]
    7. Add / Adjust /Verify the setting
    ButtonText=0
    GoldMine_Length=16603
    GoldMine=<GoldMine CompactMode="1">.......

    The entries may then look like

    [USER-OVERRIDE:FileMenu]
    opt1=S&QL Management Studio, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\ManagementStudio\Ssms.exe",,8
    opt2=&SLA Contract,,\\w12r2\GoldMine\Docs\SLAcontract.rtf,5

    [USER-OVERRIDE:Toolbar]
    ButtonText=0
    GoldMine_Length=16603
    GoldMine=<GoldMine CompactMode="1">....

    8. Save the GM.INI file
    9. the testing User should log into GoldMine and may verify the changed setting (for all other users the change gets active when they log into GoldMine the next time)
