    Resolution

    [REASON]
    - This is RM # 253181
    -
The reason for this behavior is the 'duplicate'  MERGECODES row - the correct and valid for CONTACT1 and the additional  wrong one for CONTACT2 >> this should happen ONLY on customers who  started with a GM 4.0 or sooner or where the partner customized the  database based on such an old COMMON sample database

    [WORKAROUND] / [RESOLUTION]

    - This field is NOT available as column in the CONTACT2 and cannot be used by GoldMine, therefore the row within the CONTUDEF can be deleted.

    -
Before applying the steps verify if in the CONTACT2 table structure that there is no column MERGECODES (while unexpected make sure to verify)

    1. Make sure to have a full running backup of the GoldMine database
    2. In Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
    3. Expand the GoldMine database
    4. Button New Query (make sure that the GoldMine database is selected in the Database drop down), copy and paste and execute the following query

DELETE FROM CONTUDEF WHERE FIELD_NAME = 'MERGECODES' AND DBFNAME = 'CONTACT2'

    >> This should result in 1 row(s) deleted

    5. IIS reset
    6. Verify behavior >> The Refine button should now work, if the same error message is still presented, please verify related Knowledge Article # 27928
