    Question

    HOWTO: Show a printer overview to users after disallowing access to PC Settings or the Control Panel?

    Answer

    Giving users an overview, without giving them access to Settings or Control Panel, can be done by creating a managed application for explorer.exe that uses a shell command to access the Special Folder for Printers.

    This will open an explorer window in All Control Panel Items > Printers with all printers in the details pane. From here the user will be able to see the printing queue and set another printer as default printer.

    Command: %windir%\explorer

    Working directory: %windir%

    Parameter: shell:PrintersFolder

    The same way the Devices and Printers window can be shown.

    Command: %windir%\explorer

    Working directory: %windir%

    Parameter: shell:::{A8A91A66-3A7D-4424-8D24-04E180695C7A}

    Note

    The AppIDs, of all explorer.exe applications, need to be added to the customAppUserModelID.xml to show them in the Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 Start Menu.
