Desktop icons are placed one position downwards at every login or Workspace Refresh

Version 4

    Problem

    Consider the following scenario:

    • Shortcut creation mode is set to merge or replace mode.
    • The following Microsoft Windows registry value is configured to show the Shell Folder Personal on the desktop.

    Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel

    Value:  {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}

    Type: REG_DWORD

    Data: 00000000

    • The Display Name of the AD User object contains a pipe symbol. Example: First-name Last-name | Description

In this scenario, the desktop icons are placed one position downwards at every login or Workspace Refresh.

    Cause

Windows does NOT allow a pipe symbol to be used in file names.

    The following characters are reserved:

    •     < (less than)
    •     > (greater than)
    •     : (colon)
    •     " (double quote)
    •     / (forward slash)
    •     \ (backslash)
    •     | (vertical bar or pipe)
    •     ? (question mark)
    •     * (asterisk)

    Solution

Remove the pipe symbol from the Display Name of the AD User object.
