Does AV quarantine any Excel files?
No, AV does not get a chance to scan. This occurs after installation of AV. The scanning doesnt have yet. Does happen with any other MS app like word, access, etc. Only with excel on Win2000, with Office 2000.
I would say that this is more than likely caused by the Outlook E-mail Integration. For some reason it is trying to refer to the installation point of where Office was originally installed. When AV get's installed we install an Outlook plug-in to scan the e-mail for viruses.
If you have a network share that Office 2000 exists on, you could try changing the default location in the client registry to point to that network share.
I believe it is typically in a registry location similar to this:
Thats an interest. So installing LD causes just excel to ask for the msi? I would think it would ask for all MS office apps. Not just excel. Its happened before in my company, we never have found the cause. The fix is simple enough to just point it back to the original msi, issue fixed, but I guess its one of those mysteries of the universe.
What does the Office MSI log files and event logs say? Seems strange. Is this all machines or just some? Does the reinstall kick off immediate or does it wait until you launch Excel.
Also I would gather:
Windows Installer version
Office SP Level
LANDesk versions Core/Client and SPs.
OS Version SPs.
Be interesting to watch the install with filemon/Procmon to see if any files are getting stepped on. I thought I read somewhere where you can disable the MSI auto update feature, but I would not recommend this.
the MSI logs dont show anything. The msi installer is current 4.1 It happens on Window 2000 system with Office 2000 only. Only affects opening Excel files directly. If you point the msi, it loads something and it fixes the issue.
Like I mentioned, its not a big issue and its fixable.
