How to eliminate duplicate entries in query

    Rookie

In a product that I previously used (not one I'd recommend), there was an option available to not show duplicates in query output.  For example, you're looking for all machines where a specific file name or defect exists in order to get an accurate count of machines with that file or defect.  If the file or defect exists more than once on a machine, the query output lists the machine for however many times it finds the file or defect on the machine, so skews the actual total number of affected machines.   Is there a way to filter out these duplicates from the query output?  We are using a SQL database.

      Thanks,
