    .img vs .wim - LDMS 8.8 => LDMS 9.0

    cyberdemon Apprentice

      Preface:(This is a fresh install of LDMS 9.0sp2)

      I have a question about the ldvpe1.img file in 8.8 and getting this image file to work in 9.0.

      I copied the ldvpe1.img file from our production Core server LDMS 8.8sp4 to our test VM LDMS 9.0sp2 in the \\sharename\ldmain\landesk\vboot directory. I've tried to manually specify the path under the Manage drivers in WIndows PE image as well.

      O Others (For user specific image)

      hit Next> - don't add any drivers (as it already contains a bunch from our 8.8 environment) and finish.

      Am I able to use a .img file, even though it appears that LANDesk 9.0 is now using .wim?

      When i look at the log file, it doesn't copy the file to my PXE rep. I cannot PXE boot with whatever it copied as a boot default. I have not added anything into the default .wim file.

      Do I need to start over with my PXE boot image?

      PXE rep log: (i've removed machine name and IP address info)

        • 1. Re: .img vs .wim - LDMS 8.8 => LDMS 9.0

          you need to use the .wim with LDMS 9.0, it uses a completly different version of WinPE compared to the LDMS 8.8.  Even if you did get it to boot using the .img, you would miss out on functionality that the Vista 2.1 WinPE provides.

          Id recommond just redeploying your pxe reps to update to .wim

            I take it they took no effort/research in converting the two image files? It just seems presumptuous on their part that we need to rebuild the WinPE boot strap image with all new drivers. When in fact, it should be just adding Vista/and or Win 7 to the existing XP drivers.

            Perhaps it makes no difference now. Maybe Vista drivers fixes ALL old XP drivers and i'll have no issue booting machines with the newer drivers.

            I just hope my XP environment/re-image efforts won't be affected if we "productionize" our test 9.0 server.

            I don't like change sometimes, and certainly don't like to go back and re-invent the wheel (build up the WinPE image).

            but, thanks again for clearing up my "not knowing" once again Emiranda.

              I feel your pain,  and to be honest be ready for another change.  I dont know why LDMS 9.0 decided to go with Vista 2.1 PE with Win7 WinPE 3.0 was out.  So eventually we are going to see the same change again moving to the WinPE 3.0 which is based off of Windows 7.

              Change does suck but unfortunatly we are in the field that changes the most, just think of it as job security
