Using Provisioning to build standard device?

I have never used provisioning before but now want to use it to push a standard set of applications to a device that has been built using OSD (I don't want to move to building through provisoning at the moment as this will be yet another learning curve and OSD just works for us at the moment).

I've created a template, and schedulded it to the target machine, but nothing happens. The task is setup as policy, required installation and has been started (I've also tried install at next login). What do I need to do to trigger the device to start the installation?

Am I going about this wrongly? I simply want a simple process for our PC builders to be able to push all the standard software to a device in one hit. I thought provisioning would be the answer, but if there is a better way then I am open to suggestions.
