option to WAKE UP client unavailable

    Specialist

This refers to LDMS 9.0 SP2+++ and using the network view to see clients and wake them up via RIGHT-CLICK -> Wake UP.

I'm working on a few test machines to troubleshoot WOL problems and I have three identical machine types in a single folder within the LDMS console.  I've got one machine which never lets me wake it up via right click, and then I have the other two which DO allow me the option.

      Here is a scenario:

      1. I have all three machines powered on and I can run inventory scans on them from my console.
      2. Next I can shut each one down.
      3. After they shut down I have to manually refresh the window in the console to get them to show a valid status
      4. two fo the machines report the RED CIRCLE w/LINE next to the little display icon and one reports just the display icon
      5. it is the latter which doesn't have the red circle which does not allow me to wake it up.

-any thoughts on why this might be?  I see the same status reporting behavior in both the ALL DEVICES folder as well as a custom folder under MY DEVICES.

What makes this really annoying is that I don't have this problem if I try to do the same thing from the landesk CORE using the console installed there.

          ...can't edit OP.

Just to be clear, the odd duck has the WAKE UP option grey'd out on RIGHT-CLICK

Additionally, all three have the same version of the landesk AGENT aboard.

The red circle should appear if the PC cannot be contacted. If you ping the machine by name from your console PC (the one with the problem) do you get a response?

It could be possible that there is a response being received from a ping that is preventing the discovery cycle from believing the machine is offline.

thanks; I want to get back to this and test your theory, but for the time being I've set aside my WOL issues and moved onto a few other pressing matters.  I'll certainly make another go at this as soon as I can reassign that machine to WOL testing purposes.

While we're on the topic of WOL issues; I've heard great things about your previous WOL solutions; any chance you are going to update your tools to work with LDMS 9.0?  I ask simply because it doesn't appear, at least in my experience, that this product can really get the job done.  For so many years WOL has been a no-brainer for us when we used other products but we're dead in the water with our 'upgrade' to LANDESK.

I've had a similar situation before.  First, make sure that there isn't another machine with that IP address in the data base.  When LD is pinging nodes to see if it's on, it can get confused when the device ID is offline, but not the IP.

I doubt that's the problem, but hopefully it will lead you to the right direction.

Hi, the v9 wake-on-wan version is currently in testing so I'd expect to see something out in the next couple of weeks.

                      @Goose8

if the cause behind your statement is indeed true, then LDMS has a problem...

...which is that it relies, in part, on a dynamic value:  the IP address.  While LDMS should certainly log and make use of the IP address for a given machine, it should not rely on it.  Said another way, LDMS should not permit its functionality to hinge on a piece of dynamic information.

does anyone else know something about LDMS reliance on IP addresses?
