You may find that switching the type is possible via a scripted solution. Chat to your local support/SI team about this. It's similar to wanting to delete a CI type and starting again. This is possible, but there isn't a gui interface to do this.
we have a consultant on site in early July to upgrade live, I think I'll wait until then and discuss it with him.
You may want to speak with Support as we've had problems saving any CI consolidation config under 7.4 and they've logged problem 4739 for this.
We encountered this during a Configuration Management training course that one of their Consultants ran for us on site.
