    Inventory Scan Errors

    cpbergerson Apprentice

I am running LANDesk 9 SP2 with March patches and I seem to getting a lot of clients with this error.

Faulting application LDISCN32.EXE, version 9.0.3.13, faulting module user32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x00009dda.

Any ideas as to how I can resolve this.

If you add a /DEBUG switch to the inventory scan shortcut and open the ldiscn32.exe.log file from c:\program files\landesk\ldclient\data\ and look at the last lines in the log file it may give you an idea of where it is failing.

Post the last few lines of the LDISCN32.EXE.LOG here.

It is likely coming across something during the scan that makes the Inventory Scan less than happy.

Below is the last few line of the log file before it craped out on the software scan.

I am still fighting with this on a few systems and it appears that the Inventory Scanner is choking .exe files located in profiles.

I have been compenstating by deleting the old profiles on the affected machines, but would like to fugure out why this is happening.

                Hi Carole,

Is this happening on every scan?

Is there a difference between scan ocurring at login verses a force full scan after the user has logged in.

I had some scanning issue a long time ago and added the  /W=120 to the all users startup for the inventory scan. Which delays the scanning two minutes.

                HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

This is only happening to a small percentage of the population.  On the affected computers it does happen on every scan until you clear the file it is choking on.  Whether the scan if forced or runs automatically.

We are not using scan on startup, but random every 24 hours.

Have you tried any of these to help indentify the issue, deleting all the files in the directory but one that is giving you trouble:

                    • Reseting the NTFS permissions to the folder
                    • Copy the file somewhere, delete the orginal, and copy the file back
                    • Find a script that displays all the attributes of the file and see if anything looks wierd
                    • Copy the file to a working PC
                    • Remove the disk and add it as second on a working PC.
                    • Run a CHKDSK /R and Defrag

In looking at this more, I believe it something with the Inventory scanner itself.

I looked at several of the things suggested, but they are all good.

When running the debug, the thing it chokes on is an unknown application as the last thing before it errors (see part of Log file below)

This looks look like .Net installation done by the user. It could be the that scanner is running into issue pulling information out of the registry about the software installation of this executable.

I'm unsure if .Net uses MSI, but you could try the MSI cleanup utility. Run msizap.exe from the commandline to look for issues with installation. I've run "msizap.exe !G" to clean up orphaned files.

There is an option to remove product codes which may be same as numberic section of the path to the executable.

Carefull with msizap it can be used to remove the Windows Installed from the PC. One of the folder it removes is the one you are having issues with"%AppData%\Microsoft\Installer".

CAUTION: Products installed by the Windows Installer may fail to
                                 function after using msizap

NOTE: MsiZap requires admin privileges to run correctly. The W option requires that the profiles for

                        * Shared DLL refcounts for files refcounted by the Windows Installer will be adjusted.

                        * The following folders will be deleted:

                          %WINDIR%\Installer
                          X:\config.msi (for each local drive)

Notes/Warnings: MsiZap blissfully ignores ACL's if you're an Admin.

You could also try upgrading to windows installer 4.5 on a problematic PC.

Are you that the scan doesn't work if run by the user RNMiller?
