Failed updating the application list, LANDesk policy WEB service is not responding.

    Rick.Smith1 Specialist

This issue has been affecting us for months with no resolution as of yet.

Running the APM for LANDesk 9 SP2, across the entire enterprise, We get the above error.

We have validated that we have no issues getting to:

      http://coreserver/landesk/managementsuite/softwaredistribution/apmservice/policyrequest.asmx

We get results from all 3 test.

APM will work one minute, and then fail to work until we reboot the core. Stopping all services and restarting them does nothing.
Firewall has been disabled and tested. There are no proxy settings configured in IE.

The APM will work for days, then it throws this error and everyone is affected. Sometimes we will have to bounce the core 3 times in a single day, other times it will go for a week. We have engaged our TAM on this and no resolution so far. We also doubled the queue length for the application pool for the APM as instructed and still no results.

          Hello,

the best way to debug this issue is to start form the client.

I'd suggest to install WIRESHARK on it and make a capture of the network traffic (preferably  excluding the promiscuous mode in the network interface options in WireShark) while you try to update the policy.

Then you can use the display filter HTTP to see exactly what the client is sending to the CORE and what the CORE is replying.

That's a good start to investigate the issue.

If you have some proxy defined in the Internet Explorer settings try to disable every kind of proxy and test the scenario again.

          Kind regards,

Will try that out. We do not have any proxy defined. We did look at the IIS logs and we could see the attempts by the APM to connect, and I would have to go look again to see what the error was.

However at the exact same time, manually going to the web test page and clicking all 3 test links would work, while the APM would fail.

In case I didnt mention this, when this happens on 1 device, all devices fail in the APM to work.

I am getting this same error here (first time though).  When we start Desktop Manager It can not sync policy.  When we hit refresh is when we see that error on all devices.

Any policy that was already syncronized will download and install.  We just can not get new policies to machines.

Maybe it was one of the Microsoft patches from last week?   Or  was it happening befor that?

We tried iisreset and restarting all the services associated with policies.

This has been affecting us since April I believe, so it was not any recent patches released (unless you are saying you just recently patched??)

Initially the TAM thought it might be realted to a memory leak on the core which had been found with other customers, but we monitored the resouces and CPU\RAM was normal every time this occurred.

We have our application pools seperated out and we increased the queue limit to 6000 on our LDAppAPM application pool. We also increased the number of Maximum Worker Processes to 2. Since doing so the number of APM failures resulting in the core needing to reboot has dropped. It seems like once every 2-3 weeks we have now gotten this error to occur. We are waiting for the next interval to occur so we can try and capture more information.

We tried restarting every service associated with LANDesk, IIS and .net (and a few others just for the heck of it) to no avail.

When we restarted the server policies started working again.

We have only had this happen once, maybe twice, and the only way to fix it so far has been full restart of the server.

This is really starting to get to a point of being overly rediculous. Software distribution is a core LANDesk component and for months now this has been an issue for us that we have reported into LANDesk.

Every week I am searching the forums for a solution to this and all I find are other posts with the same issues in LD 9 SP2 of users with the same problem and no solution. We've had this issue into our TAM for awhile now and still no solution to the problem. Whats worse is for months we have been telling our helpdesk and site support guys the APM in LD 9 would be so much better than in LD 8 and it would be more reliable. We made a huge internal effort to get users to use the APM only to have such a massive problem with its basic functionality.

LANDesk Policy Invoker Service was not magically stopping http://community.landesk.com/support/message/66119#66119 and for good luck we restart the service and try again.

Rebooting the client device does not seem to work.

We can ping the core server using the FDQN and just using the core name. The DNS search order is correct and we have no proxy settings. Firewall is disabled, AV disabled.

                      http://community.landesk.com/support/message/64863#64863

We can hit the web site link without problems

All service on the core are up and running

Curious,  have you applied the newest MCP's that are available for SD (LD90-SP2-MCP_SD-2011-0428)?

The readme for it list stopped policy invoker as one of the many fixes.

If you have, and patched your clients, and it did not work, you might want to ask your TAM or LANDesk about the 0519 patches that are in "limited availability" for now.

James - Yes we have applied the April patch, thanks for looking at that and suggesting it. We have not applied the may MCP and are waiting for it to be posted. Our management has asked us not to apply any of the patches that have not been released in the MCP community post due to concerns that applying an unofficial release will create more problems.

So we have still been working on this issue. This time we installed Wireshark on a client and are filtering to see if any http communication occurs when we manually run policy.sync.exe. The result is no communication.

We do see the communication if we use the web site test. Any ideas?

This persists even after several uninstalls and re-installs.

We are also getting these problems.  A restart fixes the problem.  It's rather frustrating, as every time someone tries to use the SD Portal and fails is another person who wont try again.

Hi, was there any resolution on this issue?  Have tried basically all the above prior to coming across this post and had the same results.

We haven't started to use the portal yet in production and can't until this is resolved due to bad perception.

Not sure if you guys get the same results as my log file below but on a new install / rebuild it works the first time then errors the second and then 3rd onwards just fails.

I did a number of things, but I cannot trace down what exactly fixed it or if it just went away.

                                  • Rebuilt the COM+ for LANDesk1 using the instructions posted in the forums.
                                  • Modified the IIS and Application Pool limits, increasing limits and threads. (<- I am leaning more towards something here)

I've got a pretty good server with lots of RAM and CPU, so I just monitored the levels and upped a number of the application pool threads. Doing so seemed to reduce the frequency and doing so even more seemed to make it go away.
