XP to Win 7 Profile Migration - How to copy IE favorites?

    DesktopAdmin Rookie

Can someone tell me how I can copy the user's IE favorites from XP to Windows 7 using the LANDesk copy profile script?  Is there some sort of %variable% I can add to the script to make it work?

I'm suprised no one has responded with an answer.  Seems like a simple task.  I have been involved with OS deployments where end users did not get their IE favorites back due to the IT department not even planning for it.  The end users were very upset.  I don't understand why this wasn't built into the Capture Profile Script.  Perhaps I am missing something but this seems unacceptable.  I have found a solution which I would like to share.  The solution does not make complete sense to me but it certainly works.  Perhaps a LANDesk person on this forum can explain why it works.  Here it is.

Inside the Capture Profile Script go to the "UMA Command file" section and select edit.  Highlight the .xml script you have created and select edit.  Highlight "My Documents" and select "New".  Copy what you see in the screenshot.

Here is what it should look like after you save it.

Notice I am on "My Documents" which makes no sense.  Most people would think you need to do this in the "Files and Folders" section.  Doesn't work, believe me, I've tried.  My thought on this is the section labled "My Documents" is mislabeled.  To me, this looks like a section to add %variables%.  Can someone confirm my findings.

            Hi,

Actually IE Favorites is a part of default profile migration settings. There is no need to include any variable for IE Favorites as you have done. Can you please check the _SMA folder from any one of the restored machines? You would be able to see Favorites folder under this.

            Please find the screenshots attahced.

              Hey Regis,

Favorites do not show up in the _sma folder.  They will show up in the _sma folder when I add the variable.  This is going from XP to Win 7.  I am on SP2 version 9 of LANDesk.  Sounds like I am missing a setting somewhere.  You got to admit, it is somewhat interesting how I got this to work.  Any other thoughts?

                Hi,

I am too on LD9-SP2 but favorites are been captured and restored successfully.

Anyways, I now did a quick test to just capture only favorites and wanted to restore it on a different folder to see the results (Since the capture & restore machine is the same). I was able to capture & restore only Favorites without any problem. I have attached the screenshots.

Why not using just the Export and Import Function inside Internet Explorer, if you have only a few Systems?

Troga, this is for a mass deployment Windows 7 project.

Regis, I am confused.  I thought you said you did not need to add a variable for the favorites yet I see in your screenshot you have added %UserProfile Directory%\Favorites\.  Is this in the "Files and Folders" section that you added that?  Perhaps it was already there for you but it is not there for me.

                      Hi,

We  are too doing the profile migration for a very large network. I tested  with the default profile migration script which captures IE favorites  too. I haven't encountered any issue with IE favorites so far.

Since  you have asked for the variable and as the default is not working for  you, I gave you an alternate option with %UserProfile  Directory%\Favorites\ so that you can test with this at least.

BTW, did you try with this option?

I tried adding %UserProfile Directory%\Favorites\ to the "File and Folders" section of my script but it will copy only 1 users Favorites over and not all the users who have signed into the box.  Honestly I have it working just fine with the method I mentioned above and I'm good with that.  I was hoping someone could explain why I had to take it to this level to make it work though.

                          Okay...got it.

I am wondering why your default profile migration does not take IE favorites into consideration as it does to me . May be the command file is different for you and me? I 've just attached the command file which is working for me. You can test with this if you want.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the additonal information .

If you're working with Profile Migration, I highly suggest looking at this document from IBM (who originally developed SMA):

                            http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkvantage_en/sma60dg_en.pdf

I've been playing with it for the past couple days, and have noticed some important distinctions that aren't explicitly stated in the LDMS 9 Documentation.

First, My Documents vs. Files and Folders - as far as I can tell, the main difference is that "My Documents" takes into account the user profile includes and excludes, while Files and Folders does not.  Syntactically they seem to be the same, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Second, the variables - %Personal Directory% is defined as "a subdirectory (My Documents) of the user profile" so it shouldn't (and in my case didn't) touch Favorites, Desktop, etc.  %UserProfile Directory% is for the actual user profile directory, so if like me you just want to grab certain file types .pdf, .doc, .pst, etc., use that with search subfolders enabled.  Note that it will re-create the directory structure in the .sma file if it does find files in any of the subfolders.  I also wanted to back up Favorites, but not shortcuts on the desktop, so rather than use .url, I made a separate entry for %Favorites Directory%\*.  Check out page 112 of the IBM document to see all the variables available.

                            Hope that helps!

I need help capturing and restoring profiles in Landesk 9.5 sp2.

We are in the process of deploying over 200 new laptops in my environment and I am having problems when restoring captured profiles.

We are capturing the profile and settings of users existing laptops (source) and we are trying to restore to the new machines O(target).

My captured action uses the %ldhostname% variable which queries the inventory (computer" devices) and resolves this to the machine name .sma and smaC.

This is failing because when the restore profile is trying to copy the captured file from the source it uses the %ldhostname% variable and resolves this to the target machine meaning the source and destination machine don't have any relationships in terms of hostname thereby pointing to a source file that does not exist.

My question is after capturing multiple devices, how can I get the profile capture to migrate profiles to new machines.

Is there a way to use a variable that can pull a custom data between the 2 machines; source and target. Or what is the best solution.
