    LDMS 9.5 Windows 7: WUAUSERV Service Required for some .MSU patches

      This is just an FYI article for the community, we have discovered that since Vista there are some .MSU patches that require the wuauserv service to be running or available in order for the patches to execute. We are just now configuring a Windows 7 image and one of the services we turned off in the image by default was wuauserv. The proper way to set this service is to Manual. This allows the service to be started on demand. We tested in 9.5 and executed the patch successfully after setting to manual, after install the service went back to a stopped state.

      There are a few ways to perform this, here are a couple:

      1. Registry setting: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wuauserv\

      "Start"=dword:00000003

      2. via comand line, "sc config wuauserv start= demand", the space after the equal sign is required, the value will not be set if the space is excluded. the SC command line tool if a very powerful configuratoin tool. If you are not familiar with it go to: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754599.aspx

      The specific patch which led us to this was MS13-008_MSU. There are others listed if you search for them on the net.

      Thanks!
