    XDD on Windows 2003

    Apprentice

      Hi

Let me start by saying, I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to place this question but I cannot find any section pertaining to UDD.  Sorry if it's in the wrong place.

We have Windows 2003 Servers  in every subnet, providing DHCP/File Server, Preferred package etc...  Since this machine is always on I wanted to put XDD on these computers and have them actively listen on the network to find new devices.  The service does not seem to be running and creating a query proves this.  Below is a snippet of the log file:

Sat, 03 May 2008 13:10:10 1932[2456]: XDDClient is not supported on a server platform

      Sat, 03 May 2008 13:10:10 1932: Service stopped

      Sat, 03 May 2008 16:45:38 1804: Windows Platform 2, version 5.2 Service Pack 2

      Sat, 03 May 2008 16:45:53 1804: Could not start ctrl dispatcher (0x00000427, 1063)

      Sat, 03 May 2008 16:46:42 3372: Windows Platform 2, version 5.2 Service Pack 2

      Sat, 03 May 2008 16:46:57 3372: Could not start ctrl dispatcher (0x00000427, 1063)

It seems that XDD is not supported or will not run Windows 2003, is this true?  Is there a way to get around this problem?  I'm using LD8.8

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance...

XDD is not supported on Server OS platforms. It is designed to work on workstations only.

            Thanks for the quick reply.

I have to say I'm disappointed with the answer (not against you).  Our Windows 2003 are the only computer that is always on per subnet.  It makes it the perfect machine for XDD.  It's kinda of pointless to have XDD on an XP machine if it's off.

Is there no way to make it work on 2003?  Could we possibly perform a run as, with previous OS.  Or run in a XP VM on a Windows 2003 Host?

So far I did not find a known work around. Running a VM XP system on the server might be a good idea. Anyway I would like you to contact the your local regional LANDesk support and submit an enhancement request.

                Hi,

I dont see why an XP VM would not work if it was bridged to the network. A bit extravagent, but if thats what you want - why not?  At least as a temporary work arround.

Thanks Ian for the suggestion.  Sigh a workaround for a workaround...

Thanks for the avatar idea also.
