    Adding answer files to LANDesk Images?

    Apprentice

      Morning all,

      I have a question regarding OS deployment and answer files. We are currently imaging XP machines that have been syspreped and all is well. I want to know if it is possible, and if so how, we could add an answer file to reduce the time and confirguration our guys have to do after imaging a machine

      Regards

          Urm - what exactly are you after now.

          An Answer-file (a.k.a. "unattend.txt") is for unattended installs. That's essentially an "install from CD" with automated settings.

          Sysprep is a different tin of worms - it has also got an 'answer file' (of a sort), in older days the sysprep.ini with Vista an XML file. Sysprep is a "full OS install" and may or may not include applications - quite different from an unattended-install (which - in turn - is more friendly for a not-so-homogeneous hardware environment).

          Are you just asking "whether" you can use these in conjunction with LANDesk? Yes - you can.

          Are you asking about injecting those into the hard-drive after you restored the image? Yes - that's easily done ...

          ... just trying to clarify what exactly you're after here, so that we can answer the right question.

            Question is regarding injecting the settings into the harddisk during the mini setup that is run on first startup.

            Cheers

              If you use WinPE, it's a simple copy command. If you use DOSPE, you'll need to do it with FWORKCL.

              An example line of us injecting a file after the image has been restored is here:

              REMEXEC27=cmd /c copy /y X:\LDCLIENT\guid.pds C:\LDISCAN.CFG

              Where we copy a file from "X:\LDCLIENT\" called "guid.pds" to C:\ as "LDISCAN.CFG" .. it all exists in scripts - just create an OSD script, and you can work most things out from there (if you do an advanced edit).

              So you can just add a command in the appropriate section of your OSD script to copy the file you want to the location you want.
