You are able to use multiple cores under your standard license with no impact. Windows Server OS and DB licenses are separate to this statement for obvious reasons.
As far as documentation, take a look at the manual and community docs referencing Core Synchronisation and also Rollup Cores.
Also, before splitting the core, make sure you have considered how applicable standard roles & scope based rights are to the situation as you may not need to split the core.
