Server agents are trying to use desktop preferred servers?

    Apprentice

LD 9.0 sp3, we use LANDesk for patching our servers, and a batch file software distribution task to run the restart of the servers.  It used to distribute the batch files (3 files, under 1mb in size) to the servers very quickly, less than 5 minutes to hundreds of servers.  Since our desktop team put in preferred servers(desktops) on their side, the batch file software distribution task takes literally 20 minutes to just download the files.  It copies them over from the core server, then goes down the list of preferred servers and tries and tries to download the files???

As a work around, I added in a blank preferred.coreserver.dat file to the reboot task, and replace the current file first, so it forces it not to look at the preferred servers.

We are also seeing this issue on the new version as well, 9.6.

You can set the preference in your delivery method. Network Usage > Preferred server / peer download options unselect preferred server

You can try to exclude the IP of each server you are patching from the IP Address Range of your Preferred servers.

Setup the Core Server as a preferred server (if not already done) and in the properties add the IP address of the servers that you want it to service. This way it will become the default preferred server for those servers in the identified range (or ranges).

What is happening is that the presence of preferred servers is telling the agents to use them. The design of these is the problem, not the presence. So have the desktop team specifically controlled which preferred servers serve each IP range? If not then it is being left to the landesk agent to 'work out' which one is 'the best'

We figured it out.  Changed the batch file, rem-med out the reboot part of it.  Reset the hash, tried it again, to help troubleshoot the download.  On the client, under the SDMCACHE folder, it has the preferredservers.coreserver.dat file.  It listed in there three desktops it was trying to copy from.  Looked in the console under Preferred servers at these three desktops.  There was no ip range listed.  Contacted support, they confirmed, if there is no ip range, it acts like a wild card and any agent will try to download from them.  I went into the SQL db for our core and exported out the Preferred servers listing and Preferred servers limit ip, then did a vlookup in excel to cross compare which preferred servers had no ip subnet range.  There was a total of about 12, I went in and updated all of these to the ranges needed, and ran the batch file job again.  It is working like it should now, downloads and runs in under a few minutes.  Going to change the batch file back to add the reboot and rehash it, test it on a test vm.

I think I am also going to go in and set up preferred servers for my server subnets so this does not happen again.

                  thanks everyone.
