    Anyone done a 16bit WinApp?

    Apprentice

      I' trying to thinstall (or ist it now thinapp?) an old 16bit Windows application. It a small thing, that once came on two floppy disks. Installing it under Windows XP runs smooth and there are no problems running this app. Snapshotting with ThinApp 4.0 was easy but at the end the build process says: Warning: skipping %ProgramFilesDir%\sisy\sisy.exe; not 32bit executable

      And of cause, the package will not build or rather the package will be empty.

      Anyone have a clue? BTW: I am using ThinApp 4.0.

      Thanx

      Carsten

          Carsten,

          You can easily do most 16bit apps. It just requires a little bit different approach. First off, you can't use the Capture wizard the same way you normally would.

          After you add the files (either with the wizard, or by manual copy to the build directory... eg. %drive_C%\myapp simply edit the package.ini to launch cmd.exe with a command line to launch your 16bit app.

          Carstens app.exe

          ReadOnlyData=bin\Package.ro.tvr

          Source=%SystemSystem%\cmd.exe

          Icon=%drive_c$\myapp\Carstens app.EXE

          CommandLine=%SystemSystem%\cmd.exe /c "C:\myapp\carstens app.exe"

          You can see from the example above that once you run build.bat, you will actually have an exe called Carstens app.exe. Also you can see that I specified an icon (just so it looks pretty)

            Tracy,

            life can be simple with your company . Two more things to go for me, amybe you can give hints for these also?

            1. How can I hide the not-so-nice-looking DOS box? Maybe using %SystemSystem%\cmd.exe /c start /b %ProgramFilesDir%\myapp\TheApp.exe? Or even better WSH instead of cmd.exe?

            2. Where do you get it from? I've looked at the manuals and community sites at VMware and searched the whole (virtual) world, but couldn't find this clue.

            bis denn dann

            Carsten

              Hello Carsten,

              to hide DOS box you can use:

              c:\Program Files\Landesk\ManagementSuite\Utilies\HideDos.exe

              or

              cmdow  http://www.commandline.co.uk/cmdow/

              One question for the path:

              Did you test PROGRA~1 instead of %ProgramFilesDir% too?

              Regards

              Axel

                I got the info from a deleloper at Thinstall quite a while ago, but it is also posted in thier forums. https://thinstall.com/thintalk/viewtopic.php?t=261&highlight=16bit

                I'm not sure about hiding the window. I'll see what I can come up with. In the mean time, check out https://thinstall.com/thintalk/ for all kinds of good intel.

                  ahe,

                  haven't done it until you asked. Now I can say, that it works with PROGRA1 instead of %ProgramFilesDir%, too. Well at least if you use C:\Progra1 instead of Progra~1 alone

                    Tracy,

                    I've been to the thintalk forum, too. But: do you still see any search button there? Without a search function it's only pain to look for a solution there.

                      I think you need to be logged in and then it is on the VERY top of the page. I ran into the same thing. it isn't a very good design, but it makes up for that with content.
