    Can not open Configure | Services, Help!

    Rookie

      We use LANDesk management suite 8.7.1.

      We just migrated our core server to a new hardware. When we finished, we found we could not open Configure | Services. When we try to open the Configure | Services, nothing happened. Sometimes a popup window appears, says "Can't open the registry on the LANDESK.". We have no idea about this.

      The old core server is Windows 2000 Server + SP4, and the new core server is Windows 2003 Server + SP2.

      We set the SAME computer name and IP address.

      migrate as the following steps:

      backup db

      coredatamigrate GATHER

      backup ldapp3.templete

      backup patch files

      backup package files

      quit the old core server from our domain, and delete the entity in the "Computer" list on the domain controller

      name the new core server computer name and the ip address same as the old one

      join the new core server to the domain

      install core server

      restore db

      coredatamigrate RESTORE

      restore all backup files

      patch the core server sp3

      Anyone could help us to solve this problem? Thanks a lot!

          A question about this part:

          backup package files

          quit the old core server from our domain, and delete the entity in the "Computer" list on the domain controller

          name the new core server computer name and the ip address same as the old one

          did you *RENAME* or *NAME* your new 2003 Server-based Core? There's a pretty big difference. If you RENAMED him, you may as well reformat it ('cos IIS will be a mess and WebConsole pretty much irreparably broken).

          What should be needed is this - (simplified steps)

          1 - Install the new Core from scratch with the "old name" and hook it to the domain, as if it were a "new LANDesk Core". Just build it as if it were a normal Core - with a uniquely named certificate

          2 - restore the database over the existing (near empty) one, and make sure that you've got your "LANDesk ManagementSuite" group populated as you want/need it to - and COM+ objects configured to use a domain account - the usual stuff.

          3 - When you've imported the database, you need to verify a couple of values + tables, to make sure that they're pointing to the right Core (registry entries won't be an issue, since you've not touched those and installed it with the right name).

          These are:

          KEYVALUE -> change AGENTCONFIGURATION -> CORENAME -> to your core !

          METASYSTEMS -> Make sure that all values which mention your Core are correct (this is particularly important in the DB-connection string)

          METASCHEMAS -> Make sure that all values which mention your Core are correct (we reference the datamart-files here)

          4 - If you've UPDATED your service pack, make sure you run "SVCCFG.EXE" in the ManagementSuite directory and add+delete a space to the user-name of the DB-string. This is so that SVCCFG checks the database and will upgrade it if needed (which might be, if you're hopping between service packs).

          5 - Re-activate the Core Server

          6 - You should be good to go.

          And remember - KEEP BACKUPS at the different stages. That way, if something should go wrong, you haven't wasted 1/2 a day.

            Firstly, thank you!

            The Sequence we rename the server:

            1. Install the windows 2003 server, named a different computer name, and set a different IP address;

            2. Install the LANDesk Management Suite;

            3. Uninstall LANDesk Management Suite and the MSDE when we get to know Cant rename the server after Core Installed;

            4. Rename the server, and set the IP address, both SAME as the old server;

            5. Join the new Server 2003 to our domain;

            6. Install LANDesk Management Suite;

            Maybe the Install and Uninstall Steps cause the problem, it is "not clean" in some sense.

            Is the REDO from scratch is the only way?

              Is it the ONLY option - no. Is it the FASTEST option - yes, most definately.

              Changing IP's on a Core is fine - that's harmless. Changing the NAME is pretty much terminal to IIS and a few other things. LANDesk Servers should never be renamed ... work with DNS-alias'es if you have to, but don't rename them :).

              The fastest way out of this debacle would really be IMHO to re-do this thing with the correct name from the get-go. It'll save you hours of other kinds of grief.

                Thank you very much!

                We will REDO it for saving hours, haha.

                I will post my result when we finished.

                  We REDO from scratch yesterday, everything is fine.

                  (Name the Server and Set the IP address at first, and then install the core server, and restore the db and cfg.)

                  We also upgrade to Landesk Management Suite 8.8.

                  Thanks a lot! :-)
