Non-descriptive error after inputting credentials in OSP

    jParnell Specialist

I am creating a knowledge article on OSP for our End User Services group; it will be a one-all comprehensive doc on basic usage and troubleshooting.

In setting up a lab environment for this, I opted to use VMWare so that I could grab screenshots at every step of the way.

I have my virtual machines set up for a bridged network connection so that I can use the actual PXE server on my VLAN, and the VM's receive a legitimate IP from the DHCP server. It will boot to OSP's WinPE environment, and will prompt for credentials.

Upon entering the credentials, I receive the error message "An unknown error occurred. If the problem persists, contact the LANDESK administrator"

The section of the log that jumps out at me with errors is here (full log attached), from where it checks credentials to where it fails:

In the mean time, what I am attempting is to build a custom boot ISO with the OSP WinPE boot media and the VMWare Tools drivers injected into the boot.wim (per this guide https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1011710  ).

      Any ideas?

Ok, the boot wim with the VMWare drivers did not help anything. Any further advice would be appreciated.

Could you zip all files include all of the handler files?  Not just the Provisioning log.

As you wish. Protected info redacted. If you require logs from the core, I do not have access; I'll have to request that from the LD Admins in my company. I only handle the OSP portion, and my group has no permissions outside of OSP, but our admins are awesome about getting me what I need relatively quickly.

This is the entirety of X:\ldprovisioning inside a VM that is failing.

For what it's worth, I have tried removing and creating new VMs, with numerous different hardware configurations in the VM. I know I have successfully imaged a VMWare VM in the past; as recently as a couple months ago in testing a new template.

I may have figured it out......

My normal flow, when inputting credentials on a physical machine, is to tab to all sections; i.e., input domain, hit tab, input user, hit tab, input password, hit tab, hit space to confirm.

Using this method in the VM results in the above error. However, if I click all the fields with the mouse, I am able to proceed without error. I have successfully replicated this result 4 times now.

It appears that a tab character is being recorded in the password field and the ProvisionGUI is unable to parse that. ProvisionGUI.exe.log does have an entry "Could not parse command".

I am going to test with this some more; I am curious if it is doing this because it is in a VM environment, or if it is because I am using RDP to connect to the VM server. I will have to go to the physical machine and see if the issue persists.

                --EDIT--

It has to be something to do with RDP. When I'm physically at the host machine tabbing into the fields, the guest machine does not have issues.

Realistically, this is a non-issue, as OSP should never really be used in an RDP session except in cases like this, where you're deploying to a VM while remoting the host. Other remote technologies, like RealVNC, do not see this same behavior.
