Are you on 8.8 ?
Appologies for not replying earlier but i have managed to resolve this issue, turns out that 8.8 service pack2 doesn't resolve the old email problem of having to make an amendment to the SQL database for each email alert created. Once i had changed the SQL database it fired off email alerts ok.

Resolved as per my previous note, the SQL database needed to be altered for each email alert created as per below.
Get on your SQL server and fire up SQL
Find the LANDesk DB and under Tables find ‘AlertEmail’
This table will list all email configurations that have been configured on your Core.
Scroll to the extreme right column (NonExtended) and change the value from ‘0’ to ‘1’ for each email config
