You're right, you can't display the Incident number on the Note window Title bar but, as you surmised you can have it as a read-only attribute on the window. Better still, you can set the label to be a hyperlink and therefore launch the incident from the note. This is very helpful if you include notes as knowledgeable items and therefore get them returned in your results.
I did a pdf search of all the manuals for 7.2.4 for 'hyperlink' but did not get a hit that explains how to set the label as a hyperlink. That option isn't in window manager, nor do I see reference to it in object designer. How do I set it as a hyperlink, and will that open the incident in console?
Highlight the label of the attribute (not the attribute itself) in Window Manager and on the properties tab set the Show Hyperlink to True.

If I look at the category label there is an option to set it as a hyperlink, but not the reference number.
What am I missing?
Not sure straight off but here's a screenshot of another system that works in this way for you to compare - the light grey area should be something to concentrate on I think to ensure that you've selected it from the same object?
