The Apple Classroom app has not been released yet, but many of the hooks are in place. There are some items that you can find in the Profile Editor. For example the section Lock Screen Message is new with 9.3. Under Restrictions you can also see "Allow screen observation by classroom".
Just from spot checking, if you see anything that says 9.3+, it is probably for the Classroom app when released. Apple is basically considering iOS 9.3 as a major update for education. They said they are trying to avoid releasing an iOS 9, 10, etc. with great features for education in October. This is sort of iOS 10 for education according to Apple. That is a great idea in my opinion and Apple should have done this a while ago.
The Apple Classroom app is live in the Apple Mobile App Store for iPad (only). Think it's still a beta though, so tread lightly.
Wish Apple had done this like 5 years ago : )
Sean is right. It is available and live. I installed it this morning because I knew teachers would be pounding down my door wanting to do it. From what I've read here (Education Deployment Guide by Apple Education on iBooks ) and here (https://help.apple.com/schoolmanager/)
you generate config profiles within the MDM to define who is in the class, etc.
I can see in the Config Profile Reference PDF (https://developer.apple.com/enterprise/ConfigurationProfileReference.pdf )
on page 20 that the payloads are there. I'm just not finding them available within 7.0
I can see that the application restriction is broken out into it's own category (very handy) and that they can be created for 3rd party apps, but no separate payload for Education.
Good point. My understanding is that it was released so that the small group of beta participants can actually test it out. For general use, most people will hold out until it is officially released with bug fixes and then we can officially support it.
The classroom app is not beta. I'm on another list serv and there was talk this afternoon about the Classroom and using the features of that. One person on the list has it working.
Long story short, I got it to work after some frustrating hours.
The issue that I was having was that I was under the impression that the classroom iOS app had to be installed on each iPad that I wanted to be involved with the program. I've found out that the classroom app only needs to be on the "Instructors" iPads. Also upon further investigation, it seems as if each iPad that is a "student" iPad needs to be associated with an account through OSX Server. There is an option for the "Shared Logon" feature, but you need at least 32GB iPads and we only have 16GB versions.
Because the "Student" iPads are integrated into the OSX Server MDM and have been set up with Apple's Configurator 2 application and have the Supervised box checked, the classroom application does not need to be installed on the iPads. You simply create student accounts (ex. Student1, Student2, Student3) and assign each of those accounts an iPad in the OSX MDM Profile Manager. You add the students to the students section of the "Classes" option in the Profile Manger Library (left hand column on the main Profile Manger screen) and then you do the same with the instructor accounts, create one and assign a device to instructor account and add them as an instructor in the "Classes" section. I did not have to add any devices to the "Classes" section because we were not using shared devices.
Once I did all this, I was able to use the classroom application as the instructor and could see all of the student iPads that I had added to the class. If I created more than one class and the instructor account was assigned to be the instructor of both, you can choose which classroom to enter through the app.
So where would I find the equivalent of the Profile Manager in the LANrev Admin console?
Support for the Classroom features will be present in the LANrev 7.1 release.
