I have few questions about Mac features once MDM support installed ?
1 - Is there any technical way to create configuration profiles with variables working ?
2 - Once VPP as well as users registered, does apps from Appstore are automatically pushed on mac ? (Despite the fact everything looks setup, no app are installed)
3 - Is there any self-portal for users to lock or wipe their own Mac device ?
To be honest, I was expecting several improvements for users and IT about adding Mdm support and I'm unfortunately starting to doubt . Wrong perception I hope. What about your experience ?
1. I think the consensus is Profile Manager and/or Open Directory needs to be in the mix in order for variables to work. Make sure someone creates a COBRA to adding $MDU_ type variables to OS X. I'll have my name added to it, too.
2. When you use the "Install OS X App Store Application" command, I believe the app does get installed. What you CANT do currently, is assign a VPP app to a computer group for automatic deployment like you can with iOS. Have yourself added to COBRA-22840 if you want this ablity, too.
3. Yes, there is a self-portal which is part of the webadmin console. You'll want to get that setup if you need the self-service part. Preferably on its' own Windows server (requires Win).
Aside from the lack of variables, I think LANrev's OS X MDM is as capable as any. There's really not much too it compared to what iOS can do but that's Apple's doing. LANrev has been adding any new Apple capabilities pretty quick once Apple makes them available.
I primarily have the MDM setup to use with FileVault2 key management. Also plan to use with VPP a bit more than I am already (which isn't much). I do use the profiles quite a bit, but only the FV2 bit actually needs MDM as far as I know. I do have "enrollment user" set for some machines, but I haven't figured out an actual need for that.
Thank you very much for your input. I also will add my demand on both COBRA tickets. Most of our management vision and policies are based on configuration profile so being restricted like this is quiet frustrating. Being able to populate AD infos through variables to users account are just a big value for users as well as IT. I really hope Lanrev will place a priority on that feature because it just make sense and should already be set and functional (some already do it). I don't want to start to add new Apple server(s) to fix this lack. Anyway, I will contribute on adding my name for this request.
Also, does anyone know where to find informations about Web admin installation ? I downloaded Web admin zip file but no doc in it and no mention within Lanrev for windows, getting started guide, integration / optimization guide or users guide. Any idea ?
Search HEAT LANrev Web Admin 1.7.3 on your Heat Software Software Portal. That is the latest version.
Unfortunately, it doesn't come with any documentation Also from previous doc found on old Absolute repository, it seems not possible to host the web portal on the same MDM server arf !
I think your correct but if I remember correctly Absolute (at the time I set ours up) did not recommend it. I just spun ours up on a VM.
MDM and webadmin are both web servers. You can't run them on the same server.
Thank you very much guys
I will set this up on another VM later. Meanwhile it's gonna be COBRA time.
Let us know the cobra # when you get it so anyone interested can add their name to it. It has more weight that way.
You have been added to both engineering requests, COBRA-20367 and COBRA-22840. Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for adding the features through COBRA #.
Is there any way to follow our requests ? Could we expect to get any update at some point ?
I know that engineering is actively working on both of these issues. At this time, I cannot disclose a release version number.
Oh come on Dave, 7.2, just say it.
Come on Dave +2 ... just say it
