In addition to the KB pointed to above (thanks, well done ), I've scribbled a doc together a few years ago, that's a bit more visually explanatory.
That may help you along the way here. I'm attaching it to my comment here. It may help fill a few gaps (and at some point I'll try to make it into a proper community article to merge with the info in the doc above)...

I think it is easier to use the tool RegToInv from Jan Buelens (ask your LANDesk support or Jan for the tool)...
From the RegToInv 4.4 doc (from 2006):
The purpose of REGTOINV is to incorporate selected values from the registry, INI files and WMI in the LANDesk Management Suite (LDMS) inventory database. The LDMS inventory scanner already uses the registry and WMI, among other sources of data, but REGTOINV provides extra functionality. Example: the standard scanner can only retrieve individual registry values; REGTOINV can retrieve a complete registry key.
Sorry, but I'm not sure, if it is allowed for me to attach the tool... I think it would be a good thing, if LANDesk can create a download link for it (and some other tools too...), perhaps below the "Tips and Tricks" section... (why does this section is so difficult to find now after changing the portal structure?)
