Need help to setup a Prefered server.

    Apprentice

I am trying to setup a prefered server in order to win time on remote sites.

But i got first some questions.

I would like to know if it is possible or if there is a workaround instead of giving only a servername to have provide a more détailed path.

Our setup is the following :The server name is "\\Bruserver" and the location of the packages are "\\Bruserver\Information Technology\Packages".

is there any way to use it this way ?

Because on \\Bruserver, there are already many shares and i don't want to have the share packages visible on the network.

I am afraid the answer is no but still, i want to be sure.

      Thanks.

You dont need a more detailed Path.

Landesk is using the path from your package, so you must just mirror the path of your package on your preferred server.

          Example "\\Bruserver\Information Technology\Packages" goes to "\\Bruserver02\Information Technology\Packages".

          Best Regards

            I don't understand.

So i got a Coreserver and currently, all the packages are located at \\coreservername\packages.

Now i want to setup a prefered server for a far site and currently the packages are located at "\\Bruserver\Information Technology\Packages"

When i add a new server name, it only allows to provide a servername and not a path such as \\Bruserver\Information Technology\Packages.

So i completed this server name field with only bruserver.

How will landesk found the packages folder ?

Think of a preferred server as only the servername.  In variable terms it would be %preferredserver%.

so you have the following on your core:  \\coreservername\packages

so in order to get to that same directory, everything will need to be like this:

              \\%preferredserver1%\packages

              \\%preferredserver2%\packages

              \\%preferredserver3%\packages

              \\%preferredserver4%\packages

now that you have a share called - "\\Bruserver\Information Technology\Packages" which will not work

you need to hop on that server and share out the Packages folder with the name Packages

so then you can browse to that share as \\Bruserver\Packages thus giving you the exact match for \\%preferredserver%\packages

I wanted to do something similar, so I did the following.

On my Core, I created a new folder on the root (or wherever) and called it LANDesk Repository.

I then created 3 folders inside of that LANDesk Repository folder, called Software, Images, and finally Patches.

I then shared the folder (LANDesk Repository), and used the share name of Software$.  This was to hide the share from view.

Now, in LANDesk I changed the default location of my patch folder to point to the newly created share, as shown below.

Now, on my Preferred Servers, regardless of where the files were going to be stored, I created the exact same directory structure, and shared the LANDesk Repository folder using the same share name (VERY important part).  This will allow me to put it where-ever I want, and allow the patching mechanism to still function (with IIS of course).  Also, since I've create the other "category" folders, my path is a little more detailed as far as what each package is/was or how it's accessed.

                That help?

                Chris

Also, be sure to take a look at this thread for help setting up IIS, as well as the proper security for your folders.

                    Dear Dataspike,

                    Thanks for your detailed explination.

Currently, the packages are located at \\coreserver\packages and it would like to have it changed to \\coreserver\packages$ ?

How can i change this ?

Curently, the patches location are at \\coreserver\patches, do i need to use the patches folder only to deploy Software ?

What is the difference between the two ?

I just tested and it works fine with \\%preferedserver%\packages.

I would like to change the name "packages" which seems to be the default name to "packages$" so that the folder is hidden to everyone.

In the "Download Updates" Window, it is the folder \\coreserver\patches which is by default, so i really don't know where to change the "packages" to "packages$".
